As I recall there were quite a few states this summer that found themselves in the middle of a severe drought and still are. Atlanta, Georgia almost had to find a way to get clean water from the BOTTOM of the lake they rely on. Even after some early winter rains our area still finds itself in the state of a moderate drought.
Jerry Turner, a beef-cattle farmer from the Stony Man community of Page County, tills soil for fall planting. Like many producers in Page, Turner had to tap into reserve grain to feed his cattle when this summer's drought kept much of the pasture on Turner's farm from growing. "Right now we're taking out feed that we had reserved for winter," Turner said.Photo by Tom MitchellFor Turner, 53, and other farmers in Page County, bad years are starting to outnumber good ones.
"For the last ten years, except for one or two years, we’ve had periods of extremely dry weather," said Turner.
Beyond the heat, visible signs of drought are everywhere.
"I’ve seen more streams drying up this year than I’ve ever seen before," said Betty Fox, who runs a cow-calf operation just south of town with her husband, Eugene. "My father is 84, and the water levels around here are the lowest he’s ever seen."
I'd like to know where in God's name are you going to find the water to fill and refill a bone shaped pool. I guess if you have the money to pay for it. I wonder if in time of water restriction the doggy pool goes dry. I'll have to do some more research on this one.
Oh and here's a little tid bit of information: The odds have grown that the economy will slip into a recession.
WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate leaps to a two-year high, record numbers of people are forced from their homes and Wall Street nose-dives again. Such is the fallout from a housing meltdown that threatens to slingshot the country into a recession.
The big economic question these days is whether the weakening economy will survive the strains or collapse under them.
Could put a little cramp in business and Katie and Choo Choo"s vacation but let me run out and book their reservation anyway. We'll just charge it.
