As a former Catholic and I say former because I've left and am not going back, I find this display by a priest totally offensive.
Monsignor Lisante was giving the invocation at a New York State Republican Party dinner that was also host to Dick Cheney among others.
He obviously isn't taking the word invocation in the spiritual context that it was meant. How much of Father Lasante's personal message is ever preached from the pulpit? The quote below that comes straight from his web page certainly was not on display this night.
"Too often, I suspect, we think that because our point of view is sustainably right, we have the right to belittle and reduce people who don’t get it. And we don’t. Not by Jesus’ example, anyway. He would challenge, but always with respect for the other person. Rightness, He knew, doesn’t entitle us to cruelty." Monsignor Jim Lasante
