I'm also starting week three of a twelve week walking program. I incline my treadmill to 6% (not flat) and start with a speed of 2.6 mph.

Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey's long time trainer said that you have to exercise to lose weight. Shorter bouts of a more challenging workout can cut duration of the exercise time. If you go up on the incline on the treadmill at the same speed you can increase your workout intensity. Bob Greene said that it could be different if you have high blood pressure or medical problems, so you should always check with your doctor before changing or beginning any workouts.
